Dr. Robert O. Uppgaard, D.D.S., is widely recognized as an international expert on TMJ and TMD disorders, and is well-known for his tireless patient advocacy work. He was instrumental in the passage of the Minnesota state law that mandates insurance coverage for TMJ disorders by challenging the U.S. Supreme Court.

He wrote his world-renown book, Taking Control of TMJ: Your Total Wellness Program for Recovering from Temporomandibular Joint Pain, Whiplash, Fibromyalgia, and Related Disorders, with input from Drs. Janet G. Travell and David G. Simons, who are the pioneers of trigger point therapy and myofascial pain. Dr. Uppgaard wrote this book to educate patients as well as practitioners how vitally important it is to treat myofascial pain to fully address dental and other aspects of TMJ/TMD.

The works of all three individuals are recognized across many fields of healthcare, including medicine, dentistry, massage therapy, neurology, chiropractic, craniosacral therapy, and physical therapy.

Here is what Dr. Uppgaard has to say about the MyoFree® Solution:

"Self-Help is the way of the future. Enabling people to take charge of their own wellness is powerful medicine. The easy-to-learn MyoFree® Inside-Outside™ intra-oral therapy technique teaches patients to self-treat at home on an as-needed basis, and the program does not involve medication, injections or other invasive modalities.

There is more than one type of TMJ: Myofascial pain (the most common form) is discomfort or pain in the muscles of the jaw as well as the neck and shoulder muscles. Orofacial pain (pain in the teeth and face) is taught in dental schools, but myofascial pain (pain in the muscles and fascia of the head, jaw, face, neck and shoulders) is NOT taught in dental schools. Dentists need to distinguish between "facial" and "fascial".

Myofascial dysfunction is present in all craniofacial pain syndromes. Treating the trigger points from within the mouth is the only way to reach and release the muscle dysfunction and spasm. It's time practitioners learn these techniques and pass "The MyoFree® Solution" along to their patients so they can have a comprehensive home care program to keep them pain-free."

While we teach you how to use intra-oral trigger point release therapy in great detail, Dr. Uppgaard teaches you how to fully understand TMJ from a full body perspective. He explains how the entire body is involved, identifies harmful habits and stressors that contribute to the problem, discusses postural problems, illustrates facial exercises that can help, and so forth. We feel you will learn a lot from his work.
